Reflections on the 2006 NCI Clinical Trials Training for Nurses
For the past four years I have worked within oncology in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. Presently I work as a Clinical Nurse Manager II on a Day Oncology Unit within Beaumont. I completed a Higher Diploma in Nursing Studies (Oncology) in June 2004. I was fortunate to attain a place on the Clinical Trials Programme for Oncology Nurses arranged by the Ireland- Northern Ireland- National Cancer Institute Cancer Consortium.
This five week program with a world recognized institute afforded me tremendous opportunities. The in-depth training into clinical trials has provided a greater insight into the entire process. The quality of lectures in bioethics research, disease processes, and Evidence Based Practice was of the highest standard evoking a greater reflection on my practice. Clinical research, nursing research and Evidence Based Practice are areas in which we must all take a proactive role. The highly qualified staff was incredibly accommodating with their time, knowledge and skill and I have forged some valuable links to help with future projects.
During my time there, I was able to observe the structure and operation of oncology services and from this hopefully I can make some positive changes to our services. Throughout my five weeks and since my return I have realized what a privilege and opportunity this course was.
